A cafe is sold one seat at a time

A cafe doesn't succeed because of its menu alone. It succeeds because someone walks in, finds a seat they like, and decides to stay for another coffee. When Mrunal G., the owner of Cafe Moko, approached us, her brief was simple: make people want to stay.

Cafe Moko is a 750sqft space in Viman Nagar, Pune, and our job was to give it a clear identity while keeping it practical for a busy daily service.

The brief

Every cafe project begins with three questions:

  • Who is the customer: students, working professionals, families or a mix?

  • What does a typical hour look like: quick takeaways, long laptop sessions, or conversations over coffee?

  • How should the space feel on the first visit and on the fiftieth?

For Cafe Moko, the answers were playful, minimal and a warm.

Layout: designing the journey before the decoration

Before choosing a single finish, we planned how people and staff move through the space.

  • Entry and counter: The counter sits front so a first-time visitor sees the menu and the coffee station straight away, and the queue never blocks seating.

  • Seating mix: We combined window bar stools, two-seaters, a communal table, a corner lounge so that solo visitors, couples and groups each have a spot that feels right.

  • Back of house: Prep, storage and dishwashing were planned before the front of house, because a beautiful cafe with an awkward kitchen fails by the second month.

Light: the cheapest luxury

Good lighting is what makes a cafe feel inviting in the morning and intimate in the evening. We worked with three layers:

  1. Natural light through windows / glazing during the day.

  2. Warm ambient lighting to keep the room soft in the evening.

  3. Accent lighting over the counter, display and feature wall so the details are noticed.

Warm colour temperatures make food and faces look their best, which also tends to look good in photographs people share online.

Thinking about your own cafe, restaurant or retail space?

We design interiors that work for both customers and operations, from the first sketch to handover.
